Use of HT-4189 headphones with soundbar - nitewulf - 04-20-2023

I currently have the HT-4189 headphone set with bluetooth transmitter connected to optical out port of Sony Bravia KD-43X85K TV. The TV has no headphone jack. I'm currently using a Yamaha SR-C20A soundbar connected to the #3 eArc/Arc HDMI port on the TV. When I wish to use my headphones, I simply turn off the soundbar and the headphones work as expected.

Here is my dilemma:  I want to upgrade my soundbar, but the ones I looked at (Sonos Beam 2 and JBL bar 300) will not turn off completely. By that I mean pressing the power button on the remote or unit, only places the soundbar on "standby". If you attempt to use your headphones, they play for a few seconds and then the sound is "hijacked" by the soundbar. As far as I know, I have only heard about two possible solutions to this problem: 1) physically unplug the power adapter and/or remove HDMI cord from the soundbar each time you wnat to use the headphones or 2) Disable both the CEC function and eArc HDMI function (on the TV) each time you want to use the headphones.

If anyone knows another solution or if any other Avantree product would get around this, please let me know. A third possible solution would be to buy a new soundbar that will in fact allow itself to be turned off completely when needed such as the Yamaha I am using now. I think that's going to be the only practical solution here, but I wanted to hear what others had to say first. Thanks.

I have a Zvox soundbar connected to my  Insignia Fire TV thru the optical port.  I do have an audio 3.5 mm port and I connect my TV listening device -currently my HT381.  I control the volume to my ears with the volume wheel on my HT381 and my other folks can control the audio volume through the Zvox soundbar controller or the TV controller.  Both work completely independent.  Does your TV have any other audio ports that you can convert to 3.5mm?

My old Samsung TV had a headphone jack and I had a Bose system attached to the optical port and it worked as you described in your setup. I forgot to check before buying and was surprised to find no headphone jack on my new Sony TV.

In response to your question, there is a single yellow 3.5mm jack on the back of my new Sony TV that's labeled Video/Audio L-R so I assume it can be used for either, depending what is plugged into it. It's a composite connection (see link).

Another solution would be to connect the soundbar to optical port and use an optical splitter to connect the headphone transmitter as well. In that scenario, you would just mute the sound on the soundbar when you wanted to use the phones. This setup is in a bedroom so Dolby Digital through the optical port would be fine. I don't need Atmos or DTS, etc.

Thanks for your reply. Looks like I have several options to choose from.

There are a few different options we can suggest right now

  1. Can you use TV remote control to set the TV audio output to OPT rather than HDMI when using Avantree headphone?
  2. How about add a HAX05 between your TV and your soundbar. Then you connect HT4189 to HAX05 instead of TV.
  3. We are working on a new TV set which support HDMI passthrough, HT7100, ETR 2024Q2, FYI
